With the Stihl MS 261 C chainsaw, we are dealing with a professional device. Stihl MS 261 is mainly used in forestry. In the aftermath of the storm “Norina”, Stihl MS 261 chainsaw was able to prove itself beyond the test in heavy use.

Stihl MS 261 Review

So far we have mainly tested chainsaws for the private sector. The Stihl MS 261 C, on the other hand, is intended for professional users. As we were surprised by the hurricane “Norina” in Duisburg shortly before the start of the test, which killed countless mature trees on the publisher’s premises and in the surrounding area, the Stihl MS 261 C was also used under the toughest conditions in addition to the usual test routines. The first clean-up work was carried out by the Technical Relief Organization (THW), the fire brigade, and tree services; but there was enough left for us. The fact that the professionals from the fire brigade and THW used Stihl saws without exception should speak for itself.

As long as the chain on the 37 cm cutting set is sharp enough, the motor with a power of 2.8 kW pulls it through mercilessly. When it comes to the achievable cutting speed, the motor power is no longer decisive, but the technology of the user. As usual with Stihl, the engine starts immediately without any great effort and revs up cleanly without any misfires. Regular engine maintenance is limited to the areas of filters, spark plugs, and cleaning. Everything that goes beyond that should be carried out by an authorized workshop if necessary.

In action

In commercial use, the saw is mainly used for cultivating and thickening (measures to regulate the stand) and thinning in poles and weak trees. Of course, it can also be used to procure firewood. Clean and effortless cuts make work much easier. The saw is easy and sensitive to guide and impresses with its work progress. In order to enjoy this saw for a long time, it needs to be looked after and should be filled with a chain adhesive oil for high temperatures and speeds.

A chainsaw in the professional middle class has its price, of course. However, anyone who regularly depends on a supply of firewood or who frequently works with logs will quickly appreciate the Stihl MS 261 C.

Fully automatic regulation of the settings

The petrol-powered chainsaw MS 261 CM has M-Tronic technology, which controls the ignition timing and fuel metering precisely and electronically in every operating state.

With M-Tronic technology, ignition timing and fuel metering are taken into account due to external conditions such as temperature fluctuations, different usage levels or fuel quality. In addition, the last setting can be called up so that every time the engine is restarted under the same external conditions, the full power of the engine is immediately available. In other words: you no longer have to worry about adjusting the carburetor yourself. The chainsaw always has the optimum engine power.

Two-mix engine and low-emission values

Due to the two-stroke engine with two-mix technology, the chainsaw guarantees high performance and high pulling power. In addition, the engine is extremely economical. This is due to the fact that a four-channel cylinder was combined with a flushing reservoir. Although the engine produces an extremely high cutting performance, it works with low emissions. Among other things, this is made possible by an HD2 filter, which is equipped with very fine pores and therefore filters even very fine dust. In addition, the actual filter is relieved by a long-term air filter system that filters out coarse dirt particles in advance.

The device should be able to be used by forestry professionals and private users alike. The machine helps with delimbing and felling of medium-sized stocks as well as with the production of firewood. In addition to calculating the perfect ignition point, the ideal fuel-air mixture is also set. This gives the user maximum engine power. Many other technical details such as rustproof stainless steel silencers and captive nuts on the sprocket cover as well as the one-piece hood with three quick-release fasteners complete the picture. You have to reckon with acquisition costs of around EUR 900.
