We’ll show you how to start your STIHL chainsaw safely and correctly. There are different approaches and methods here.

BEFORE STARTING YOUR STIHL CHAINSAW
Before working with your chainsaw, the workplace must be secured.

PREPARE THE WORKPLACE FOR WORKING WITH THE CHAINSAW

  • Chainsaws produce toxic fumes as soon as the engine is running. These gases can be odorless and invisible. You should therefore only work outdoors or inadequately ventilated rooms. Closed rooms are not a suitable working environment.
  • Check the subsurface of your workplace. Caution: There is a risk of slipping in slippery conditions, wet conditions, snow, ice, on slopes, on uneven terrain, or on freshly peeled wood (bark)
  • Keep other people, especially children, away from the workplace.

After you have refueled your STIHL chainsaw, please note the following:

  • Please always keep a distance of 3 meters from the refueling point.
  • Check your work environment for possible obstacles and their nature. Always keep an escape route free in case of an emergency. Slippery, uneven, or icy surfaces can be dangerous and should therefore be avoided.
  • Also, make sure that there are no other people in the immediate vicinity. However, never work alone and make sure that other people – who can provide help in an emergency – are always within call distance.

How To Start A Stihl Chainsaw? - Step-by-Step Instruction

Starting Your Chainsaw

The working environment is secured and checked. Then you can start using your saw. For each of the following steps, please observe the safety instructions in the operating instructions. The first instruction applies to starting a chainsaw without the M-Tronic. For devices with M-Tronic, see the second manual.

The following instructions describe a ground start. Alternatively, you can start your chainsaw between your knees or thighs if you cannot start the saw on the ground in thick bushes or snow. If you start between your knees and thighs, individual steps such as stabilizing the chainsaw on the ground are no longer necessary.

Starting A Chainsaw Without M-Tronic

Engage the chain brake

  • Make sure you apply the chain brake before starting the chainsaw. To do this, push the chain brake forward.

Remove the rail protection

  • Always remove the rail guard when starting your chainsaw.

Press the decompression valve

  • If your chainsaw has a decompression valve, press it. This makes starting the engine and thus starting your chainsaw easier.

Press the fuel pump several times

  • If the chainsaw has a fuel pump, press it several times. This simplifies the starting process and reduces the number of start-up strokes.

Set the combination lever to choke

  • Set the combination lever to choke / cold start. To do this, first operate the throttle lock and the throttle. Then press the combination lever all the way down.

Place the chain saw on a level surface

  • To start the chain saw, place it on a level surface. The cutting attachment must not come into contact with the ground, otherwise, it would become blunt when starting and you would be endangered.

Stabilize the chain saw

  • Grasp the chainsaw on the floor with both hands. The left hand is on the handlebar, the right hand on the starter rope. Step into the rear handle with the tip of your right foot. The chainsaw is stabilized in this way.

Pull the starter rope

  • Slowly pull the starter rope with your right hand until you feel resistance. Only now do you pull vigorously several times until the engine starts briefly. Pull up as vertically as possible without the rope rubbing against the fan housing.

The engine starts briefly

  • The engine only starts briefly but stops immediately. Now open the choke by moving the combination lever up one notch to the half-throttle position.

Pull the starter rope again

  • Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts again.

Tap the throttle

  • As soon as the engine has started and is running, tap the throttle lever briefly with your index finger. Now the combination lever jumps into the normal idle position.

Raise the chain saw off the ground

  • Then slowly lift the chainsaw off the ground, being careful not to touch the throttle control.

Release the chain brake

  • Now release the chain brake by pulling the chain brake handle towards you with your left hand. Do not let go of the handlebar. When you hear a “clack”, the chain is free and can now run on the rail.

Test chain lubrication

  • Before you get started, test the chain lubrication: if you hold the chain running at full throttle over a piece of paper or light-colored wood, you should see a clear trace of oil on it.

Safe working technique

  • The saw is now ready. For a safe working technique, please read the operating instructions beforehand.

Easier starting with STIHL ErgoStart and STIHL ElastoStart

In addition to the M-Tronic system described above, we also offer other features that simplify the start-up process of your power tool: STIHL ErgoStart significantly reduces the effort required to start, and the special STIHL ElastoStart starter handle enables a smooth start-up process without jerky power peaks.

Note:

Our instructions are only intended as a supplement to the operating instructions for your STIHL chainsaw. The videos only refer to a chainsaw as an example. Therefore, different types of chainsaws may have different controls. Please familiarize yourself with the device before using your chainsaw, read the operating instructions carefully, and contact your specialist dealer directly if you have any questions.

Summary: Starting a STIHL Chainsaw

  • The procedure for starting a STIHL chainsaw can vary depending on the model.
  • Therefore, the operating instructions must be read carefully before starting.
  • There are two methods of starting your STIHL chainsaw safely: ground start and knee start.
  • For models with M-Tronic, some steps in the starting process are omitted without this feature, e.g. the second activation of the starter rope.
  • Only start working with the chainsaw after it has been successfully started. When starting from the ground, do not lift the chain saw off the ground until it has successfully started.
  • If the STIHL chainsaw does not start despite the correct procedure, we recommend asking a STIHL specialist dealer.
